A pavilion is typically a larger, open sided roof structure designed to create a functional outdoor living area. A gazebo is usually a smaller, freestanding garden structure with a round, hexagonal, or octagonal shape, often including a raised floor, perimeter railing, and more ornamental detailing.
Pavilions are commonly rectangular and built over a patio, pool deck, or other finished surface. Their open layout and wider spans make them well suited for outdoor kitchens, dining areas, fireplaces, televisions, seating groups, and larger gatherings.
Gazebos are more often used as decorative garden features or intimate seating areas. Their enclosed railing, built in floor, and compact shape can make them less adaptable for the larger, multipurpose outdoor living spaces common today.
Choose a gazebo when you want a smaller ornamental retreat within the landscape. Choose a pavilion when you want substantial covered space for everyday outdoor living, dining, and entertaining.

Completed pavilions in the project gallery show the difference in scale.
