Sap can usually be removed with mineral spirits or denatured alcohol, along with a plastic scraper and the lightly abrasive side of a dish sponge. Allow the sap to harden when possible, then gently remove the excess with the scraper before working the remaining residue with the solvent and sponge.
Both mineral spirits and denatured alcohol are effective on our finishes and generally have little effect on the stain. Mineral spirits works more slowly, while denatured alcohol evaporates faster and can be useful on more stubborn residue. Use light pressure to avoid unnecessarily abrading the surface.
If cleaning causes a slight change in the stain finish, the area can be lightly touched up with matching stain.
Most sap will exude during the first season, especially through a hot Texas summer, as the timber completes its drying process. Sap may still appear occasionally around knots, but it typically becomes less frequent over time.
